HVAC System Design - HVAV Design Services

Input requirement from Schematic design

  • Schematic Design Report
  • Applicable Code List
  • Design Guidelines or Standards
  • Symbols List (Titled Block)
  • Site Utility Plan
  • Architectural Layouts of Plumbing Fixture and Room Identity Number
  • Elevation of Building and Section Indication of Floor-To-Floor Height and Plenum Height
  • Size, Location, and Depth of all Adjacent Available Sewers, Water, and Gas Mains
  • Indicate any Special Requirement to the Local Department or Utility Company
  • The Available Maximum and Minimum Water Pressure at a Given Elevation, at Static and Residual Conditions
  • Minimum Pressure Required at Remote Fixture
  • Specify Whether Drinking Fountains Will Be Supplied From a Central Chilled Water System
  • Drinking Fountains should be provided with Local or Integral Cooling Units
  • Calorific Value of Fuel Gas
  • Minimum Pressure Required at Fixture and Available Gas Pressure

Design Procedure:

This procedure starts with reviewing location, type and giving identity (if not given) to plumbing fixture.

Documentation of the plumbing fixtures and size estimation of:

  • House sewers
  • Water services
  • Gas service
  • Hot water load

To find the requirement of plumbing fixtures for various services such as Domestic Hot / Cold Water, Fuel / Medical Gas, Compressed Air, Laboratory / Oral Vacuum. Our automated documentation procedures take care of any change in requirement with least amount of rework and errors.

Domestic Cold and Hot Water System:

  • Estimates Friction Loss Per 100 Ft. from Available Pressure
  • Estimates Distance of Remote Fixture and Minimum Pressure Required for it
  • Determines whether the Domestic Water System requires Booster Pumps
  • Assign Fixture Unit to each Plumbing fixture in accordance with usage and concerned Codes
  • Find total Fixture Units for Hot and Cold Water
  • Convert Fixture Units to GPM (considering system predominant flash valve or flash tank)
  • Size all individual ranches in accordance with Friction Loss and Flow Requirement
  • Decide from type of facility and morning warm up factor, Hot Water Boiler / Heat Exchanger and Hot Water Storage tank based on Hot water requirements
  • Selecting and Locating Fittings like Backflow Preventers, Water hammer arrestor, Water pressure regulator etc

Sanitary drainage and Vent System:

  • Assign Fixture Unit to each plumbing fixture in accordance with usage and concern codes
  • Check whether Sump Pumps or Sewage Ejector Pumps are required
  • Determine the number of Sanitary and Vent Risers considering space availability and obstruction
  • Size sanitary Drainage / Vent Risers in accordance with the number of Fixture Units to be carried
  • Size horizontal of Sanitary Drainage / Vent Run in accordance with the number of Fixture Units to be carried and Permissible Slope from code

Storm Water Drainage System:

  • Estimate Roof Area and also consider Vertical Wall
  • Find Riser and Horizontal Run size from rain flow data and applicable code
  • Inform the electrical requirements of the plumbing work to the Electrical Project Engineer.
  • Inform whether the Domestic Hot Water Heating Requirements is from Steam or High Temperature Hot Water to the HVAC Project Engineer.
  • Get the Drain, Water, and Gas Requirements form the HVAC Project Engineer and ensure that:
    • All Water and Gas Requirements are provided with Valve Connections adjacent to their equipment inlets
    • The HVAC equipments requiring drains are located reasonably adjacent to floor drains, floor sinks and funnel drains. All indirect drainage piping between the equipment outlets and the floor drains, funnel drains, etc does not obstruct aisles and passageways between equipments
  • Locate roof drains, leaders, main stacks, fire standpipe risers, sprinkler risers, etc.
  • Coordinate with the HVAC and Electrical Project Engineers regarding required space conditions For Risers, Fire-Hose Cabinets etc. and for required space in mechanical rooms.
  • Verify structural drawings for space conditions affecting the plumbing work with a special look out for beams below pipe chases.
  • Verify whether the plumbing work clears the required ceiling heights.
  • Provide the architect with the necessary Pipe Spaces, Wall Thickness, etc for the plumbing work along with the minimum requirements.

In general, piping should run direct as far as possible. However, except for piping buried underground, all piping should run parallel to and at right angles to the walls, partitions, etc. and should be grouped in parallel lines. In contrast, piping should run to clear steel and concrete beams. Where absolutely necessary, piping may run through beams. Wherever necessary piping may run through the web of steel beams or through concrete beams, with permission from the structural engineer and all such special conditions should be clearly noted on the drawings.

Plan Diagram:

  • Floor plan showing all applicable plumbing services and accessories

Typical Detail Diagram:

  • Diagram showing details of plumbing accessories and connection to plumbing fixtures or pragmatically choose room
  • The design process does not end with the completion of the design development phase.
  • The emphasis is to have a complete, coordinated set of documents to guide the purchasing, construction, installation, and primary operations.
  • Refine the design
  • Design supports for pipe considering implication seismic zone if applicable
  • Indicate various type support at floor plan
  • Showing major pipe in double line
  • Organize section for important location of floor plan
  • Coordinate with Electrical and HVAC services for location of pipe, drain etc (If necessary incorporate change in location)
  • Refine the drawing that shows all details required for execution of site work
